There are few appliances that range so dramatically in price and quality as espresso machines do. On one end of the continuum are relatively inexpensive brewers, including capsule-type units, that appeal to the less discriminating crowd that value expediency over quality; whereas, on the other end are very expensive models that are designed for commercial applications and achieving consistent brewing quality sufficient to meet the highest international standards.

One espresso machine that falls squarely toward the latter, high-quality end of this spectrum, while still maintaining a somewhat affordable price tag, is the Breville BES900XL Dual Boiler Semi Automatic Espresso Machine. But is the hype real?

The construction of the BES900XL is certainly top-notch. It comes with two dedicated stainless steel boilers (one 32-oz steam boiler and one 10-oz espresso boiler) and two Italian-made pumps, all of which allow for simultaneous brewing and milk frothing. Further, the BES900XL’s brew programming is also state-of-the-art, with precise espresso extraction temperature settings and shot temperature/volume adjustment thanks to its PID temperature control technology; various pre-infusion duration/power settings to tweak your brew to your tastes; auto-start; and numerous audio alerts.

In addition, this machine is beautifully laid out with a crisp backlit LCD display that provides shot temperature and time, as well as a “shot clock” reading, which functions to improve shot consistency by monitoring shot duration. Other interesting features, to name just a few, include its pressure regulation system that prevents over-pressurization and optimizes extraction efficiency; a low-pressure pre-infusion setting that functions by incrementally ramping-up water pressure to facilitate grind expansion and more thorough extractions; a hot water outlet for preheating/Americano brews; a heated group head that ensures proper temperature maintenance throughout the extraction; a commercial-grade steam wand with 3-pore aeration for improved milk texturing; and a large 2.5 liter water tank.

But while these specifications are indeed impressive, what about actual user satisfaction? This is where the BES900XL really shines. In fact, there are few espresso machines – at any price range – with so many glowing 5-star ratings. And this is all the more remarkable given this units roughly $1,000 price tag. Specifically, users routinely report being able to brew perfect shots consistently and getting much more of their grinds, including longer finishes compared to the same beans used on other espresso makers.

In our view, the Breville BES900XL Dual Boiler Semi Automatic Espresso Machine easily deserves its 5-star rating among the hard-to please espresso aficionado crowd. In sum, with its dedicated dual boiler and Italian-made pumps, sophisticated PID temperature regulation technology; and overall commercial-grade construction and programming, we think this model brings professional-level performance in a household unit that will not disappoint even the most demanding espresso lovers.
