To find an elliptical machine that rivals the quality and feature set of the models used in gyms and fitness clubs usually means spending quite a bit of money. But if you are willing to go relatively low-tech and dispense with a lot of the technological frills, there are some very good consumer-level machines that provide a good workout and have some basic gadgetry that is sufficient for most users.

For example, one particularly good deal right now is the 2013 version of the Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer. While this trainer does not have quite the feature set in our view to compete with many other new models in its standard price class, it’s currently being offered for $600, which makes it a very attractive option for those seeking maximum bang for their buck.

The 2013 Schwinn 425 has a basic, but very solid set of features, especially compared to other $600 elliptical trainers. For example, the 425 comes with 10 workout programs; a quick start feature; has an 18-inch fixed stride length; uses standard grip-type hear rate monitoring; has a respectable LCD display; offers 16 levels of high-quality magnetic resistance; and is equipped with the usual accessories, like speakers, a fan, water bottle and reading rack. This model can accommodate a 300-pound individual.

What the Schwinn 425 does not have that some of the other, higher priced options do, is additional workout programming; fitness tracking; a better LCD display; and more advanced hear rate tracking/enabling, among other things. Of course, these things may not be important to you, depending on your needs and, more importantly, your budget.

Overall, we think the 2013 Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer is a very solid option that comes with the basic features that we expect to see in any good mid-range elliptical machine. However, at its current discounted price of $600, it’s slightly better and provides significantly more value than its competition in our view, making it a very good deal.
